Change Unknown

Starting set value is known and the new set value that is joined or separated is not known, and the otal of the new set is known.

Compare / No Action Problem Type

The sets in question remain intact. There is no “joining” or “separation”. Answers the questions: “Who has more?”; “How many more?”

Difference Unknown

Set A and B quantities are known. Set A is larger than B. Set A and B are compared.

Join Problem Type

Two or more sets are joined or combined to make a new total set.

No Action

 

problems there are two types of no action problems comparison situations and partitioning. They are characterized by having no temporal frame of reference. There is no time line of events, nothing changes over time.

Partition Problem Type

 

The sets in question remain intact. There is no joining or separation. Involves separating or partitioning sets of objects into parts.

Part Unknown

 

One part is known, one part is unknown and the total is known.
