What is the difference between problem types and strategies?

Problem types describe the various ways that word problems can be presented to the student. Strategies are the various ways that students will naturally attempt to solve the problems.

 

What is Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI)?

 

Cognitive Guided Instruction is a research-based framework that helps teachers learn more about their students’ thinking and support them as they decide how best to apply what they have learned.

How do I identify students' strategies?  

Observe the students as they solve the problems and have them explain what they know to do.

 

How do I teach strategies to students?

 

Support the students’ use of more efficient problem solving strategies by modeling new strategies after the students have solved the problem using their self-selected strategies. To support students in learning new strategies, provide problems which cannot be solved with their familiar strategies. Offer more scenarios with similar problem types for students to solve.
